Grand Theft Auto (série)
Grand Theft Auto (GTA) je série počítačových her vytvořených a původně i dále vyvíjených skotskou společností Rockstar North (dříve DMA Design) a vydávaných společností Rockstar Games od roku 1998. Série doposud zahrnuje osm samostatných her a dvě rozšíření (GTA: London 1969 a GTA: London 1961). Počínaje titulem Grand Theft Auto III jde o kasovní trháky, které byly v různých hodnoceních označeny za hry roku. O popularitě a ziskovosti herní série svědčí i skutečnost, že řada hollywoodských hvězd hrám propůjčila své hlasy. Veteráni filmů o gangsterech jako např. Michael Madsen, Samuel L. Jackson, James Woods, Joe Pantoliano, Frank Vincent, Robert Loggia a Ray Liotta namluvili hlavní postavy her.

Charakteristika her
Hráč je postaven do role zločince ve velkém městě, který v průběhu hry postupně stoupá v hierarchii organizovaného zločinu. Při plnění jednotlivých úkolů se hráč seznamuje s kriminálním podsvětím města. Dopouští se bankovních loupeží, vražd a dalších trestných činů, ale mimo hlavní mise také může řídit taxi, hasit požáry, účastnit se pouličních závodů či se dokonce učit létat letadlem. Série Grand Theft Auto je proslavená velkou svobodou při hře, která nevede lineárně k cíli pouze jedním způsobem, ale hráči umožňuje rozhodovat, co bude dělat, které úkoly bude plnit.
Historie
Hry ze série Grand Theft Auto lze rozdělovat do několika epoch v závislosti na číslování a na použitém grafickém enginu:
* Grand Theft Auto (1997/1998) s datadisky Grand Theft Auto: London, 1969 (1999) a Grand Theft Auto: London, 1961 (1999) * Grand Theft Auto 2 (1999) * Grand Theft Auto III (2001) – zavádí zobrazení z pohledu třetí osoby o Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002) – odehrává se v roce 1986 ve fiktivním městě inspirovaném Miami na Floridě o Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004) – odehrává se v roce 1992 ve fiktivním státě San Andreas inspirovaným Kalifornií a Nevadou o Grand Theft Auto Advance (2004) – odehrává se zhruba rok před dějem GTA III o Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (2005) – vydání pro PlayStation Portable, které dějově předchází GTA III a odehrává se v roce 1998 v Liberty City, verze pro PlayStation 2 byla vydána v roce 2006 o Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (2006) – vydání pro PlayStation Portable, děj se odehrává v roce 1984 ve Vice City * Grand Theft Auto IV – vydání dalšího titulu je ohlášeno na 16. 10. 2006 současně ve verzích pro PlayStation 3 a Xbox 360
